Emily divides her time between her role as a defence barrister with more than 20 years experience in serious crime and her work as a Data Protection adviser. She regularly advises and trains businesses in their data protection needs, acts as Data Protection Officer and holds the Practitioners’ Certificate in Data Protection.
Emily is authorised to undertake Public Access work. Anyone can now go directly to a barrister without having to involve anyone else (e.g. a solicitor). The barrister's role remains essentially the same as when they are approached by a solicitor or another intermediary. Barristers can advise you on your legal status or rights. Barristers can draft and send documents for you and can represent you in court, tribunals or mediations. Barristers can also negotiate on your behalf and can attend employment or investigative interviews and hearings where appropriate.
Because the barrister's role is unchanged and there are limits on the types of work that a barrister can do, there are still some cases and situations in which you will need to instruct a solicitor or another intermediary as well as a barrister. However, for many cases the public access scheme allows you to go directly to the expert barrister for advice, representation and drafting. Please feel free to contact Emily for further information on Public Access. Emily accepts Summary only motoring offences (advice and representation for defendants) and Employment advice in some circumstances.
For further information please see http://www.barcouncil.org.uk/using-a-barrister/public-access/
Emily is regularly instructed in criminal cases alleging complex fraud, money laundering, people trafficking, people smuggling, modern slavery, false imprisonment, possession of firearms, murder, robbery, rape, drugs supply, importation and serious assaults such as section 18 Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) and attempted murder. She has also acted as both leading and led junior advocate in serious child exploitation, rapes, large-scale drug conspiracies and violence cases. She has acted on behalf of a number of high-profile individuals whose cases have been the subject of extensive media coverage.
Emily’s experience and her ability to conduct both complex and heavyweight proceedings is well regarded by her peers where she is known for her creative approach combined with an excellent understanding and application of the law. She is a strong team leader who is capable of providing the requisite analysis of a case, which often gives rise to successful submissions being put before the court both in writing and orally.
Other professional commitments:
Emily is Chairman of the UK Board of Directors of SAE Ltd, a creative media institute. She is also consulted in legal matters for a number of TV dramas, notably Father Brown, Doctors and Holby City (where she’s been known to appear on-screen!).
Extra curricular activities:
As well as her ‘day’ job Emily is an active member of her local community and is the former Mayor of her town and a District and Town Councillor. She runs her local Youth Council and is Chairman of The Theatre Shed, an inclusive theatre company for children and young people. She also helped to create Chiltern Voice Community Radio where she regularly broadcasts on a Sunday afternoon.
To seek advice from or instruct Emily in any case then contact her as above and/or telephone 07540 410130.
Emily is Regulated by the Bar Standards Board.
